Muskegon River Fishing Report

Steehead fishing is hot and heavy. This week end is the annual Muskegon Anglers Association’s steelhead tournament.Depending on how much rain we get over the next couple of days it could be a great event. Ever wonder why fly fisherman use big streamers with tons of flash? Check this Brown Trout out.

It was floating on the surface of the Muskegon River because it couldn’t  handle the meal. Talk about your eyes being bigger than your stomach .

This ii why big streamers work

Muskegon River Fishing Guide

The Muskegon River is a large River. Connected to Lake Michigan it has it’s first of several Dams just up stream from Newaygo. Starting in early October the Steelhead begin to enter the river feeding on Salmon flesh and Salmon spawn.  Through out the winter the Steelhead fishing is good to excellent.

The biggest issue with winter Steelhead fishing is the river. It’s hard to predict if the river will be open enough to fish. However the fish are there and often have been in the river with little to know pressure.  T be honest November and December fishing offer some of the most aggressive strikes out of the season and the weather can still be pleasant.

March and April bring the onset of the next group of new fish. This is the time when many techniques work for catching fish and the fish are generally the most plentiful through all stretches of River below Croton Dam.  I would say the fish are the most aggressive when striking this time of year but they are definitely feeding.

We offer Steelhead fishing trips on the Muskegon River starting in October all the way through April . We have experienced catering to many levels of fisherman. We love to teach others and fishing tips not only for the Muskegon River but for Michigan waters as a whole. If you’re a hard core fisherman or just want to enjoy sitting back and catching a few Steelhead consider us for your next fishing charter on the Muskegon River.

Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing

Steelhead fishing on the Muskegon River has been hit and miss. Fishing was begining to improve until all of the rain last night. We were begining to find Steelhead relating to gravel. Fishing had been all about covering water to find a fish here and there. With Steelhead begining to relate to gravel  we are starting to find groups of fish .

Now when we catch one fish we can usually catch 2 or more before we move down river. More good Steelhead fishing is yet to come. Fisherman are still catching numbers of fresh Steelhead in the surf and at the east end of Muskegon Lake near the Conservation Club.

Look for gravel in the 5 to 8 feet of water. There doesn’t seem to be many fish holding in the very deep holes. With the high water the average holes you would normally find fish are well over ten feet of water.

Muskegon River Fishing Report

The Muskegon River is clearing up but it’s still high. The fishing is pretty good but the sun shine make it tuff so the bite is better early. The steelhead are scattered because of the high water . Crank baits are pulling larger males while spawn continues to pull the most fish. Sections off the Muskegon River are without fish but more steelhead continue to show up daily so they can really be anywhere.

Muskegon River Steelhead Report

The Steelhead fishing on the Muskegon River has been good the last several days. The colder nights with warm days has mad the fishing slow at first light. Good numbers of Steelhead have pushed up past Newaygo with the highwater. Fisherman catching the better numbers of Steelhead are catching their fish on crank baits. The water has been dirty which is when crank baits tend to perform well.

The stretch of the muskegon river just down Croton Dam has had heavy fishing preasure. Take fair warning when fishing this stretch of the river. The fish that have been holding in this stretch of the river are startign to get smart.

There are many fisherman with varied levels of experience. Try to be patient with each other. It’s a horrible thing when people begin to dwell to much on the small stuff. Rember Walleye season is closed until the last Saturday in April.

Muskegon River Steelhead

Fresh Steelhead are in but throughout the day today the muskegon river changed to mud . We must have a had 1.5 inches of rain. I don’t think the muskegon will be worth trying until the end of the week.

Steelhead fishing

The ice flows are gone with the warmer weather on the Muskegon River. Water clarity is better and there are steelhead through the system. Water flows are still up a bit so if boat controll is an issue anchore in key holding areas for 15 to 30 minutes at a time before moving on. There are fresh steelhead showing up every day and the rain tomorrow night will bring more. The next couple fo days should eb good with the warmer weather.
