Michigan fishing in April.

Walleye’s are starting to show up in the Trenton Channel as of 3/20/09. The Detroit river is about to bust wide open like every year as far back as I can remember. If you’re looking for some fishing to do in April the Detroit River is a good place to check out. MDNR has estimated in years around 10 to 15 million walleye migrate up the river every spring.

If your looking for a place to fish on your own or trying to book a fishing charter in April the Detroit River is a good bet for getting into fish. Vertical Jigging is very popular method for catching walley’s in the Detroit River but trolling is a good thing to be prepared for as well.

The early in April you fish the better chance you have at catching a wall mounter. Most of the smaller males are caught during the last part of April and the first part of May. Trenton Channel near Elizabeth Park down to Metro Park at the mouth of the river is a good place to start for beginners. Bring lots of jigs as this area is full of snags. Staying vertical is the key to success.

Muskegon lake night walleye

The Muskegon River is full of spawning Walleye’s. Rolling all over int he upper stretches near Croton Dam down to Newaygo. The pot spawn walleye are begining to show up in the Muskegon channel ane the White lake channels. We are running fishing trips for night walleye . Even though Walleye doesn’t open up until the last Saturday in April we can still fish lake Michigan.

Night Walleye fishing trips out of Muskegon and Whitehall are very productive. The larger Walleyes show up first usually by the second week of April we start to see the smaller males in the 2 to 4 pound range. If your looking to for a walleye spring walleye trip this is one to check out.

Grand River Michigan Steelhead Fishing

Steelhead fishing on the Grand River just below 6th street dam was great all lastt week up until Friday 3/27/09. Most of the fish that were at the dam push up through the fish ladder. We did see a few small Steelhead caught but most of the fish being caught were Suckers and Walleye.

Guys sucker fishing at the Johnson Park Launch were hammering the fish. SOemthign to consider if your looking for a good time for your kids. There should be plenty more Steelhead to come . It’s a bitter later in the run on the Grand River but by no means is it over.

We are still booking Steelhead fishing trips for the Grand River for the next two weeks. We start our grand river steelhead fishing in November. Keep us in mind.

Muskegon Lake Perch Fishing

Perch fishing has been great on MuskegonLake and White lake in Whitehall as of 3/28/09. It’s great to see but there alot of small fish in most areas.  We are finding plenty of good sized perch in the 9 to 10 inch range mixed in . We are finding some areas holding only small Perch. If you aren’t catching very many keeper size fish don’t be afraid to look around.

Most if not all of the Perch we are catchign are White Perch.  We have been catching fish on anythign from spikes to Minnows. Orange Perch Flies and Samll tear drops have

We are running Fishing Charters on Muskegon Lake and White Lake. Perch fishign trips include all poles and bait. Perch fishing should be good for another couple of weeks.

Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing

Steelhead fishing on the Muskegon River has been hit and miss. Fishing was begining to improve until all of the rain last night. We were begining to find Steelhead relating to gravel. Fishing had been all about covering water to find a fish here and there. With Steelhead begining to relate to gravel  we are starting to find groups of fish .

Now when we catch one fish we can usually catch 2 or more before we move down river. More good Steelhead fishing is yet to come. Fisherman are still catching numbers of fresh Steelhead in the surf and at the east end of Muskegon Lake near the Conservation Club.

Look for gravel in the 5 to 8 feet of water. There doesn’t seem to be many fish holding in the very deep holes. With the high water the average holes you would normally find fish are well over ten feet of water.

Muskegon River Fishing Report

The Muskegon River is clearing up but it’s still high. The fishing is pretty good but the sun shine make it tuff so the bite is better early. The steelhead are scattered because of the high water . Crank baits are pulling larger males while spawn continues to pull the most fish. Sections off the Muskegon River are without fish but more steelhead continue to show up daily so they can really be anywhere.

What is the best braided line for bass fishing

With all of the different braided lines out there where do you start. Most poeple don’t realize just how different the braided lines are. Keep in mind that braid lines have mulitple advantages. The most common mistake fisherman make is only using braid line for their no stretch advantages. Â

In terms of the amount of stretch between braids I haven’t seen much difference from one to another. The fact of the matter braided line is more sensitive than mono overall. The biggest opportunity I see is understanding that some braid lines are much more sensitive than others.

From what I see if you can find the most sesitive braided line that is the best line to use. Ther is one line manufacture that from what I have seen is by far the most sensitive braid line out thereand that’s Power Pro braided line is by far more sensitive than any other. There is one reason for it and that’s Spectra. Spectra is one of the worlds lights and strongest materials in the world.

This line is so sensitive paired up with a high quality rod graphite fishing pole it’s like electricity when fish bit. This stuff works so well I use it when I’m Perch fishing in lake Michigan In mid summer we find perch in areas up to 100 feet of water. With a tyical set up using mono it’s hard to find bottom with 1 once of weight.Â

Using a reel spooled with 2 lb diameter 8 pound test Power Pro not only can I feel bottom with a 1/2 ounce weight I can tell how hard the bottom is. I can even tell if the bottom is sand , clay and especiallyrock.  Spectra is so sesitive I can feel perch bite and never see a bite. Most of the time I fish two rods and ust put my finger on the rod blank and never watch my tips.

If your looking for the best braid this is it. If your thinking that if this was true why aren’t more braided lines made of Spectra Fibers   ? I hink I might knwo why . I believe the material is hard to work with. Spider Wire was the first braided line made of Spectra but the smaller diameters were fourty dollars for a filler spool.

If you look at any of the Spider Wire braid nowit says nothing about Spectra. I don’t believe they could come up with a cost effective way to process their lines with Spectra. I believe Innovative Textiles who makes Power Pro has found a unique and cost effective way to manufacture their braided lines using Spectra which is their competitive advantage.

If your looking for the best braided line for Bass fishing , verticle jigging or deep water fishing you should try Power Pro.

Muskegon lake Perch

Perch fishing on Muskegon lake is great with people being able to look around with their boats. The only launch tha’ts open is on the Muskegon River at  the Causeway at the East end of Muskeogn lake. This is a bit of anissue for smaller boats. It’s a long run to the black buoy let alone to the West end of the lake. Both of these areas are producing fish.

Minnows and perch flies are working wellf or larger fish. There are areas holding mainly small fish. If your into the smaller perch your best bet is to pick up and move. Try the deep water off Bear Lake channel as well. Just a reminder walleye’s closed today march 16th.

Muskegon River Steelhead Report

The Steelhead fishing on the Muskegon River has been good the last several days. The colder nights with warm days has mad the fishing slow at first light. Good numbers of Steelhead have pushed up past Newaygo with the highwater. Fisherman catching the better numbers of Steelhead are catching their fish on crank baits. The water has been dirty which is when crank baits tend to perform well.

The stretch of the muskegon river just down Croton Dam has had heavy fishing preasure. Take fair warning when fishing this stretch of the river. The fish that have been holding in this stretch of the river are startign to get smart.

There are many fisherman with varied levels of experience. Try to be patient with each other. It’s a horrible thing when people begin to dwell to much on the small stuff. Rember Walleye season is closed until the last Saturday in April.

fish finder/gps combos for bass fishing

Are you looking for the best fish finder /gps combo ? I have several and I’m a bit partial to Lowrance units. The main reason for that is for years they were the leader with no real compettion. There are now several companies putting out great units with similar features. I’ve stuck with Lowrance for several reasons. The main reason is the support they give to current and past models.

The second reason is they continue to use the same windows format. As I continue to upgrade units I don’t have to start over form scratch to get going on a new unit. Instead of pointing in the dirreciton of a specific unit here are a few things to consider when picking out a unit. The size of the screen is the first thing I consider. I like the biggest screen possible.

The larger the screen the more detail I can capture. I can zoom in on a small area and it’s easier to tell how close I am to a given way point. This is critical no mater what you’re fishing for. The second main thing to consider is pick a unit that is compatible with the latest maping features. It’s common to find that the contour lines aren’t exact to what you see on your depth finder.

You can usually count on the purportions to be correct. If your ten feet away from a point on the west side while your your map says your on more times than not you can follow that point around and you will be the same distance off all the way around.   Get a mapping program with contour lines and you can now reference which depth line makes the most sense. Usign a depth line that states the wrong depth can be confusing . Once you get use to it it’s an invaluable tool.

You can’t really go wrong with any of the units today. I would suggest once you buy a certain brand try to stick with it. As often as fish finders change most fisherman end up upgrading. Sticking to a brand name will help you in the long run.
